Alexa...Of the four you mention, I've read only Hardy. So many writers, so little time - no? I spun my wife in the direction of Anne Rice several years ago (if we can talk of contemporaries), and I think Rice gets better as time goes on. The story tends to sweep me along also, but now and again - as in 'The Witching Hour' - I find myself pausing and thinking that this phrase or that page could not have been written better.
In 'Memnoch the Devil' it seemed to me that her prose gave way to her anger with God. But she can be forgiven that simply for her willingness to tackle the subject.
This (the subject matter) is where I find fault with people like Updike. I tend to dismiss him and leave him to the likes of The New Yorker.
Tell me if you've read Rice ; if so, what you think of her. And who else you like, please.
BTW, the soup was delicious. No kidding.
