Scrapps--

Further on my last message about VW and Oppenheimer: I wonder to what extent this sort of move is simply established procedure (CYA) in some circumstances, and to what extent we'll see a disagreeable round of follow-the-leader in this.

Or can it be--in some perverse way--that these firms are trying to help by maintaining ratings while lowering the bar? Haven't followed today's IBM story closely, but they got a bunch of downgrades this morning, while at least one outfit--I forget who--simultaneously raised FY earnings estimates.

Why do they bother with FY '98 estimates anyhow, in an industry like this one? What'll happen with 56k? xDSL? Cable? Other new products the Robot may be working on? This is true for almost any tech company; in my view it's utterly pointless to try to look that far down the road. And they're always so specific about it: the company will earn $4.63 in '98, and the like. Silly.
