You are right, the gift cards have been better than expected! They are the furbies of the Home Depot this year. They are activated once rung through the register and those numbers are on a internal system which become valid to be used at any HD's. Problem is they sold more than of inventory they should have taken that into consideration, so inventory turns and ROI will get hit. Hopefully the sales of the gift cards will balance this out. Wish someone would have leaned back inventory in account, now that would have impacted earnings as you have mentioned! Maybe next year when Gift cards phase two, will come out.
