"AOL's Broadbanding Horizons" in Red Herring, Jan 1999, pg 65-66
This article mentions the two complaints AOL has filed with the FTC "requesting access to TCI's broadband cable network" and trials of DSL with GTE. The article also writes that Barry Schuler, AOL's President of Interactive Services, "argues that even all the U.S. broadband networks combined cannot offer anything close to national coverage and that technical differences between the DSL and cable modem networks will limit growth."
Under the rubric @HOME DISADVANTAGE, Schuler is quoted "Cable modem service will not be the only game in town....When you look at the phone guys, who are very happy to take our billions of dollars, the cable guys are going to be at a competitive disadvantage." The article concludes that AOL is actively searching for a foothold in the broadband world.

To PruGuy: I'm not aware that MSFT had a stake in ATHM. I hope,however, that some of Netscape programmers clean up AOL 4.0, which my wife installed yesterday on her new Christmas laptop.She was dismayed when she kept being thrown off of AOL. At the same time, I had no problems remaining online with MSFT. Moreover, I find AOL's software primitive when compared with IE. I only hope that the AOL's problems were caused by a glut of new users from the movie "You've Got Mail," which my wife and I (along with our teenage daughters) found delightful.
