A lovely history:

When I was 15, I went out on my first date! It was a high school performance of "Guys and Dolls." The boy and I liked each other well enough to continue to date steadily for the next two years. For lots of reasons that are not important to this story (think of the culture clash exchange in "Same Time, Next Year"), we broke up and went our separate ways.

Yet we have remained very special to each other. Every year on the anniversary of our first date, this man calls just to say hello. When I was going through the hysterical misery stage at the end of an eight-year affair, he came up from DC to help me through it. We spoke yesterday to wish a merry Christmas. It has been 32 years of cherishing each other. This is special.
