Googies--a great place! Bob Dylan and a lot of the great folkies used to drink there back in the 60s.
I first went there back then when my friend, who worked at the Philmore East Concert Hall, lived across the street from the pub. I was a new drinker at the time, having just turned 18. So there I was all googie-eyed, carring two fresh 20-dollar bills in my pocket--a lotta money back then--and I was feeling pretty good.
My friend bought my first beer, I paid for the second with one of my 20s. Mid-way through my second beer, my friend looks down and his eyes light up as he pulls a twenty dollar bill off the floor, and promptly proceeds buy a round for everyone in the bar. Later on, I'm at the end of my third beer, so I reach into my pocket for money to buy another one. Lo and behold, I was short $20. So it turns out Googies was not only one of the first places I ever had a legal drink, but also, unbeknownst to me, it was the first time ever bought the bar a round! Been going ever since, making it a definite stop every time I visit NYC.
Some Zulu investors got together there over the Thanksgiving holiday week and we had a great time. It went so well, we're gonna do it again this Tuesday night, 6 p.m. at Googies (Sullivan Street, near Washington Square Park) in New York's West Village. Anyone is welcome to join us. You'll recognize the group because I'll be wearing rollerblades--plus we'll be talking about Zulu.
Hey Squally, tell cousin Jimmy to buy the Zulu group a round. We had Pat Hayton with us the last time, so he took care of it for us. But he ain't gonna be there this time, so we'll need the help. Better yet, Squally, visit your cousin and join us! |
