Do you know a link on the web where the exact calculation formula for the SP500 index is given. Standard and Poors' site is not very helpful. I can think of lots of ways to calculate a "market value weighted index". One page on their site suggests that it is just the total market value of the companies. So if a company issues equity in a price neutral way the index would go up. That's not a "price index" in the normal sense as used in economics.
