We must be twins. I loved The Tin Drum. I did a paper on it in college. Did you read Cat and Mouse and Dog Years as well?

I have seen all the movies you mention, and like them all, especially "Picnic.." Have you seen all of Weir's movies? I especially liked "The Last Wave". Weir isn't as good now that he has gone Hollywood. Since you saw "Raise the Red Lantern," did you also see "Shanghai Triad"? That was the film that finally made my husband insist I not force him to watch anymore depressing Chinese movies. It is true that they were depressing movies, and I did rent a lot of them, but they were REALLY good movies. I will just watch them by myself from now on.
