C-Span Seeks Impeachment in Public

WASHINGTON (AP) - The C-SPAN public affairs network has asked the Senate to conduct all aspects of an impeachment trial in public, thereby allowing the entire proceeding to be televised.

In a letter to Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott, the cable network noted that existing rules would require deliberations in the trial of President Clinton to take place in closed session.

''Full and direct access of the public to each senator's consideration of the evidence would be consistent with the openness characterizing each step leading up to the trial,'' wrote C-SPAN chairman and CEO Brian Lamb in a recent letter to Lott, R-Miss.

C-SPAN covers House and Senate floor proceedings and committee activity. Coverage included the House Judiciary Committee impeachment proceedings.
