Geoff, for once I have nothing to add! I agree with all that you have said concerning assignment. I faced a similar problem with covering TLAB last month. Unfortunately, I mad the wrong decision and repurchased my options. Luckily, I was able to exit my position with a very slight gain. But in retrospect, had I simply waited for assignment I would have had a sizeable gain. The market maker's spread ate most of my profits.

But you do need to change brokers. Those commissions you are quoting are outrageous.
