A new way to shop online

If infomercial shopping is your addiction, feeding it will get even easier next year.

General Instrument of Horsham, Pa., announced last week that consumers will be able to use Visa smart cards in the next generation of digital-cable TV set-top boxes due out in the second quarter of 1999.

The announcement by General Instrument and Visa is one more technological leap in how retailing is changing from shopping in stores to shopping online via computer and television. And it is also an indication of how quickly TVs and computers are morphing into each other.

As cable-TV programmers, banks and other companies integrate the smart card and direct TV selling and access into their products and services, consumers will be able to slide the cards into slots on their cable boxes and use the cards for TV-shopping, pay-per-view movies, home banking and collecting electronic coupons.

Consumers buying with smart cards will trim costs for TV retailers who must now pay for people, toll-free numbers and other equipment to take orders, said Myers. The new system could save retailers $4 to $8 on each of the millions of transactions they handle every year.

So she sees technological developments such as this one stimulating more companies to sell directly through television programming.
