Unfortunately, I believe you are right. As you must know if you've checked my profile, I just discovered these threads recently. It was right before the impeachment vote and I was astounded by the Dems I saw every day fighting this issue on emotional grounds and ignoring the legal ramifications. When I found Sanity Check I thought it was my chance to show some misguided, but seemingly intelligent people the simple and direct logic in support of impeachment. I've never meant that impeachment is a good thing; simply that it is (with subsequent resignation or removal), at this point, the only viable choice. There is far more at stake here than Bill Clinton, the economy or the future of either of our current political parties. As I've said repeatedly; our liberty is the most likely victim in all of this.
There is one point that I tend to agree with the liberals on, and that's the wisdom of allowing Paula Jones to file her suit while Clinton was in office. But I'm not sure how else that should have been handled. We don't want people to be able to file frivolous civil suits against elected officials (or, for that matter, against anyone else), but we also don't want to deny anyone's right to file a legitimate suit, so...
Of course, the first step in determining whether a suit has merit or not is the grand jury, and that was where Bill told his lies, so...
Regardless, whether or not the Jones suit was proper, Clinton still had a responsibility to tell the truth. There came a moment in time when he weighed his responsibility to obey the law against his own self-interest and chose the latter. And I continue to be astounded and frightened by the people who don't seem to recognize how dangerous it would be to allow that precedent to stand. Ahh, but I've said it all before and still, as near as I can tell, the only people who agree with me are the ones who already agreed with me.
I just wish that, assuming we do throw away 220+ years of relative liberty for the sake of one paunchy, middle-aged, mendacious sex addict, the Dems would be the only ones that would have to live in the coming tyranny. And I know they think that's fantastically alarmist, but it's so obviously true. Nobody can be above the law. If they are, they will tyrannize those of us who are below it.
As for the Democrat's hostility; throughout history, whenever the movement towards dictatorship has started going strong, the masses have been encouraged to be openly hostile to those of us who see things clearly enough to intelligently criticize them. This is no different.
See you in the gulag,
Bob Lao-Tse
P.S. Michael: I still feel bad about criticizing your exchange with Pezz the other day. I still think you were being kind of petty, but I certainly understand why. Sometimes the frustration of offering up clarity and receiving vitriol and ad hominem crap in response makes me want to start trying to rip somebody up on a totally personal level. So far I've mostly refrained, but I haven't been around here that long either. :-) Bob |
