GM Plans to Announce Details of Diesel-Electric Bus, WSJ Says

Detroit, Dec. 28 (Bloomberg) -- General Motors Corp., the world's largest automaker, will announce this week details of its plans to develop a hybrid diesel-electric transit bus, which uses 40 percent less diesel fuel than a conventional bus, the Wall Street Journal Interactive Edition reported, citing an interview with Robert Purcell, executive director of GM's advanced vehicle technology operations. New York City will take delivery of a GM test hybrid bus in 1999, and GM plans to make more vehicles with its bus-making partners in 2000. GM also plans to compete to supply the U.S. Postal Service with 6,000 electric mail delivery vehicles, the paper said.

GM and Toyota Motor Corp., Japan's biggest car company, said Dec. 21 they're discussing possible expansion of their joint research into environmentally safer vehicles.
