I agree. Take Rembrandt, you could call that "slap-dash" if you looked at a section 1" x 1". Or Picasso. Or Vinnie, for that matter. I guess for me , it is the quality of the execution, regardless of the route the artist takes. That's a tough one to define, but Vermeer said (at least to me), "I am not making any errors on my gameplan." He could have been a putz and forgotten long ago without the sublime communication of his work. The effortlessness of the stroke, whatever the stroke is. Or even if it is not effortless, which it seldom is for me, the result SAYS effortless in a masterpiece. For me.
