That was a thought-provoking post, Clark... it had that undefinable zen quality that you don't often see at SI.

Jim, by banners I mean the ad boxes at the top and the bottom of the pages. Click one and make a Finn happy! Click two and the law of karma will reward you and your offspring. As a matter of fact, there's a new, special year-end column at

debry.com

where you can try this!

Maurice, I'm deeply touched by your support. May your sheep prospere and avoid scrapie epidemics. But the QCOM is still on thin ice both in phone manufacturing and standard wars.

PoorRich - docking is over. It's history. Nokia has put out some nifty phones with infrared features in the GSM-900 market, but it looks like they will jump directly into Bluetooth in USA in the latter half of 1999. Then Nokia phones will communicate with laptops and stuff via radio interface... Sony is part of the Bluetooth consortium and upcoming Sony stuff should be compatible with B gear.

Jon, that 60% market penetration by March in Finland is good news indeed. It shows that there is no sign of sales growth let-up even in countries where market penetration is highest. From France there is another good sign - they have topped 10 million mobile phone subscribers well ahead of projections. Over 90% of the subscribers have digital phones.

Steve - I'm sure it's some kind of sign of emotional immaturity, but I'm hooked on "Snake". I think the next wave of mobile phones will take the game concept even further.
