I spend a lot of time in art museums, in fact once I get off the computer we are headed to Baltimore, so I should go. Scratch that, the Walters is dark Monday, I guess we are going to the Aquarium and the Science Museum. Anyway, I note with sadness and some disdain that much modern art is fading fast, made with poor materials. Poor value for the buyer, but they didn't seem to care. Vermeer cared enough to make it last. So did Giotto. And others, of course.
I saw an exhibition of Monet Waterlilies at the Walters this summer, it was really weird, everyone (but me) was using the narrative tapes and moving in lockstep. It was really noticable because the show was crowded and the room was very long and narrow, and it was kinda like being on some weird assembly line, everyone stepping in place. They were very annoyed with me because I was moving out of step. I wrote down the colors in Monet's palette, I was wondering how he got a certain violet, but I can't find the piece of paper, it is on my bedside table with a zillion other pieces of paper. |
