LindyBill, I can't imagine them having a problem with the DOJ about such a move if it were to take place UNLESS they control too much of the database business. It appears that IBM and ORCL have most of the high end anyways and MSFT just starting to move with SQL. My point would be that they should take over the other companies while their market share is increasing with SQL. Once it increases -- it will be a lot more difficult to get approval from the government. Of course if they had no plans to take over, I would think they already have plan for the high end in the works, if it is area they want to be in. I suspect they will move in sooner rather than later (maybe 1 to 2 years max.) if a business case can be made for it. I think SQL Server 7 is the start of things to come. Everytime Larry Ellison of Oracle makes a comment about MSFT, I get the feeling they are worried about the future competition they will face - ie - cut into margins. He makes so many anti - MSFT comments along with McNeally of SUNW. If MSFT was not a threat to their businesses, I think they would not bother saying anything at all. I have noticed that IBM does not make public anti- MSFT comments. What does it mean? Maybe they realize that MSFT is not a threat to their core business.
