Thanks, Shawn. There is no shareholder discount. What the person is referring to is, in actuality, the special shareholder _offer_ to buy a Prosignia package. I would really have to closely check web sites to see if his/her price comparisons are correct [CPQ vs. Dell vs. Gateway]. This poster does not give enough information to determine if the extras in the shareholder package, the uninterrupted power source, printer [I think--I'd really have to check the offer again at CPQs web site], and cable are taken into account when he/she says the others' cost less.
One thing I question in the posting is his/her comment about CPQs warranty not being as good as those offered by the other two companies. This PC comes with a three year warranty, the same as the others as far as I know.
When people say "identical" as this person does, I question if they actually mean identical, as in clones with different name tags, or if they just mean all the PCs are using the same Intel chip and have same _sized_ hard drive and amount of memory. Components from different companies have different prices. Identical sized hard drives from different companies do not necessarily cost the same and people might prefer hard drives from one company over the other. So, within a price range, if two companies have different 'guts' and I'm not knowlegable enough to rate one component's manufacturer against another, I'd go with factors such as warranty, customer service, product dependability--non-price considerations--in making a final decision.
A CPQ shareholder wanting to buy from CPQ and possibly not only because the price is $50 lower at Gateway??? This person should buy a white box at a store near his/her house and save even more.
I'm in the market for a new PC and looked at Compaq's and Dell's web sites before Christmas. I was _not_ comparing the CPQ shareholder offer with the same speed Dell [because I don't want the extras in the investor package] but CPQs offered-to-anyone model. In my notes I have nothing about price--which leads me to think the difference was so small it was not worth even considering.
