He has to make a good faith attempt to end what the public regards as a long-drawn out mess. If it drags on, and as is likely, nothing new is uncovered -- nothing that can be substantiated, that is (which means, we have to leave out the Drudge Report in its entirety!) -- then the public will at least know that the President did whatever he could to bring an early closure to this tired circus.
