[g.lite white paper]

hi MB,

if either orctf or fujitsu have come to an agreement with txn/amtx... it hasn't been publicized... tho that would indeed be in character.. ;) ... expect they are (at least) talking on a regular basis and am hoping that licensing/cross licensing? (maybe with fujitsu) gets done.... sooner rather than later...

fwiw.. my rough understanding of the adsl patent/standard situation : txn/amtx, motorola and cisco (thru telebit) all hold patents which may be important for efficiently implementing functionality called for by parts the adsl standard... of this group txn/amtx's may be the most significant...

and the list of co's with a claim to the action seems to be just getting longer.. seems like bel was just awarded a relevant patent... and aware seems to feel they have an angle on patents potentially important for the upcoming g.lite standard...

tho am inclined to discount the significance aware's claim (relative to these other's)... as g.lite seems to be basically "simplified" full speed adsl... and it sounds like every bit of effort was made to keep g.lite free from proprietary angles which hold the potential to slow down both deployment and interoperability.. but i certainly could be wrong.. ;)

in any case, supposedly in situations like this, companies with relevant patents covering technology which has become a basis for industry ansi/etsi "standards" are required to license "such technology on a fair and reasonable basis to third parties who request it" ... "fair and reasonable" sounds straightforward enuf... tho would imagine the complexities are probably contained in the generalities ... ;)

btw have you noticed that in 1997 orctf applied for four patents "covering certain dsl and cable modem technologies" ? (p20 97 form 20f) .. elsewhere it is mentioned that one patent is for cable... so that leaves three for dsl.. don't have a clue what they may be about...

---
and have you looked thru the new g.lite white paper up on the orctf site?:
orckit.com

nothing particularly new, but a pretty thorough description where things are right now with g.lite ... thought the discussion of splitters/filters was well done.. as was the logic of g.lite in the context of today's typical backbone thru-put maxing out at 400Kbps...

best wishes
