I'm not sure they could buy a nationwide DSL carrier. I simple posed the question of a possible scenario.

Sorry to hear about your short position in AOL. Hope you have healed.

I only short stocks I own when a correction is in progress as a hedge.
I cover as close to bottom as I can, then buy using 50% of my margin account and hold until weakness is apparent. Pay the taxes and smile all the way to the bank.

It may seem like a strange strategy but it works for me, and I've never had a margin call. It accounts for an extra 20% this year without selling my longs. I stay long-term until I think fundamentals and/or growth rates change.

I confess I did sell some of my DEll to buy AOL in November.
