<< ''We are pleased to be working with RadiSys.'' said Vesa Sarkikangas, Nokia's head of hardware development for switching platforms. ''RadiSys was able to meet the extremely tight schedules and even beat some of them. The modular architecture of Nokia's DX 200 switch makes it possible for us to concentrate on our own core competencies in the development of the switch and to outsource other tasks to leading companies in their respective fields, such as RadiSys in the development of embedded CPU systems.''

At an increasing rate large Fortune 1000 OEM's are outsourcing the design and production of the various hardware components for their systems, whether it be embedded DSP hardware from Spectrum or embedded CPU hardware from Radisys. By outsourcing to specialized niche companies like SSPIF and RSYS, the OEM's achieve faster times to market, higher performance, better designs, lower internal development costs, and less risk than they could achieve on their own.

Spectrum had 38 DSP Design In's through q3 this year and likely +- 50 for the full year, many with commercial OEM's. Announced recently are contracts with Kodak for a photo processing system, Bell Howell for a mail sorter, and Siemens for a medical MRI machine. Per recent conference calls it was also stated that telecommunications equipment OEM's and semiconductor equipment OEM's are designing products which include Spectrum's new c6x and Sharc DSP hardware.

Despite the 38 reported In's reported this year, the actual contract announcements and quarterly financial performance were pretty light in comparison. I am hoping that with TI finally beginning to ramp production of c6x that we should see improvement on both these fronts in 1999.
