tech - You missed an important one - MSFT did a deal with Tandem in 1996 which gave them technical access to NonStop SQL, which is not well known since it only runs on Tandem Himalaya machines, but is one of the best databases from an architectural viewpoint. MSFT announced in September that they had done an additional series of agreements with CPQ for Tandem NonStop technology including both cluster and database pieces. This seems like a much more solid plan than acquiring a second tier player outright.
