RCN combines four ISPs under RCN.com By Reuters Special to CNET News.com December 28, 1998, 4:40 p.m. PT URL: news.com
RCN, which provides telecommunications services in the northeastern United States, said today it would combine its four Internet service provider operations into a single group under the common brand name RCN.com.
During the past year, RCN has gone from virtually no Internet customers to nearly 500,000 through four major acquisitions and strong internal growth.
RCN now will merge its ISPs--Erol's, UltraNet, JavaNet, and Interport--into one entity that uses RCN's state-of-the-art fiber optic network. It will be marketed under the unified RCN.com brand name.
Shares of RCN, one of the most heavily traded Nasdaq issues today, jumped 7.25 or more than 54 percent to close at 20.625.
"This is an extremely significant moment for RCN, and for our current and future Internet customers, because it represents the integration of four successful and well-respected ISPs under a common RCN brand," RCN chairman David McCourt said.
All new RCN Internet customers will be given an "rcn.com" domain name or e-mail address. Internet service to existing Erol's, UltraNet, JavaNet, and Interport customers will not be interrupted, and these customers will be able to retain their current e-mail addresses.
In addition to both dial-up and high-speed Internet services, RCN offers local phone, long distance, and cable television in several markets from Boston to Washington.
