US adj chain-store sales up 3.1 pct--BTM/Schroder

NEW YORK, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Last-minute Christmas shopping and a bout of cold weather propelled chain-store sales 3.1 percent higher in the past week, according to the latest BTM/Schroder chain store sales index.

Sales for the week ended December 26 were on-to-above plan for most retailers, but discount stores generally experienced the biggest boost in sales, it said.

On a year-over-year basis, sales rose 5.5 percent.

While a winter storm in the Southeast limited sales in that region, the return to seasonally cold weather helped spur sales for winter apparel in many other areas, BTM/Schroder said.

The boost in sales in the past week is likely to help lift sales for the month by 4.5 to 5.0 percent, the report said. The retail industry will report December sales on January 7.

The seasonally adjusted index is jointly produced by the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and Schroder & Co. Inc.
