Rolling out/up usually means that you sell the ones you hold and buy the ones with future expirey/higher strike in one transaction, which ensures that you do not get affected by market swings during the time your transaction is taking place and also pay less commission. This implies that there will be tax consequences as with all other short term trading. If you want to avoid taxes in the near future, you may give LEAPS (long term options) a consideration. LEAPS are also less speculative in nature.
