VIAGRA WINS OK FOR PRODUCTION, SALES IN JAPAN

A Ministry of Health and Welfare panel has approved the production and sale of the male-impotence treatment Viagra. Pfizer Pharmaceuticals Inc., a subsidiary of the U.S. company that developed the drug, applied for authorization in July. Observers called the approval unusually quick. Japanese sales are expected to begin as early as January.

Because of reports of Viagra-related deaths overseas, however, the ministry is demanding that Pfizer prepare and distribute to physicians and patients pamphlets outlining warnings about the dangers associated with the drug.

Viagra has received wide acclaim as an effective remedy for men with erectile dysfunction. It can be prescribed by physicians to patients without heart diseases or other serious ailments.

Although the number of men in Japan suffering from sexual dysfunction is unknown, one expert said that including those who don't report the condition to their doctors, there may be several million impotent men. The same expert said that 60-70% of these conditions have psychological origins such as stress.

Although the price has not been decided, Viagra sells for about 7 dollars a dose in the U.S. Health insurance plans are unlikely to cover the drug.
