In units, MSFT SQL is a major player, with nearly 50% of installations. But they play to much smaller customers - they are at 1/10 the average number of users. Oracle dominates in users. IBM's DB2 has the dominant share of mainframes (DUH!!) and is making inroads in IBM shops on other platforms, mostly RS/6000. DB2 is a great cluster-aware database but is having a hard time outside of traditional IBM customers.

1. Why is IBM having a hard time outside of traditional IBM customers given DB2 is a great product? My guess was that since IBM is in the services business, others are not going to push DB2. Why? My guess had been that other service providers, if given a choice (and if it is a feasable option), will pick SQL 7.0 mainly because MSFT does not compete with them.

2. How long do you think it would take MSFT to move from 1/10 of the average number of users?. I imagine they should be able to improve this number quite quickly.

3. Could the demise of OS2 been partly due to the fact that IBM was in the PC business. That is, why would, for example, Compaq pick a competitor's OS, if one is available from MSFT (which does not manufacture computers) ? This has been my guess. At least OS2 dropped off at a faster rate because IBM makes PCs.
