I believe they have a serious first mover advantage here - they are 'acquiring' their customer base with a lower cost structure - and in the process raising thresholds to so that it won't be easy for the incumbants to steal them back when they get their act together. Right now, the way a customer makes a decision to move to RCN is they see their current household telecom expenditure, and then compare that to the cost of combined services from RCN, PLUS the cost of equipment (if any) and then switch. I guess RCN's way out is to sell out their residential customer base to AT&T and the likes.
