Biggest single mistake of my life:

When I was a 16 year old kid shopping for my first car, Buddy and I looked over a 1936 Rolls Royce silver something that the owner was dumping after the war. It ran, but needed extensive work, and there was no local RR dealer in 1946 and I was not yet a master engine mechanic. Minimum wage was still $0.25/hr, and my stash -- which was needed later to send me to MIT -- was $475.57. The seller wanted $500, and my principles forbade me to ask for a cut in price or to take on a purchase money chattel mortgage that Father would have had to co-sign. The most useful advice Grandfather, a poverty-stricken small-town lawyer, ever gave Father (as he refused to sell off his farm to finance Father's Ph.D.) was "never put your hand to anyone else's stamped paper" (from Thackeray's Pendennis). I could easily have stolen the car, or have prostituted myself for $25 (hard to believe now!). No guts, no transport!
