20 or so years ago, I used to drive by the Spiegel HQ/shipping warehouse on Cicero Av. in Chicago every day. That building was so big it was unreal. Western Electrics Hawthorne plant was right down the road, about 3 miles. They used to make all the Bell system phones, which the young turks on the thread most likely don't know. That plant was one of the largest in the nation back then. Anyway, SPGLA still a local company, as is UBID and a lot of other interesting ones. Maybe I'll go see the CFO or something. Is it inside info if you actually go to these places and talk to management, and kick tires? Nah....But it sure gives one a feel for what they do...that is one of the things I do, go and see just what the folks are like. It is also a write-off, as if I'm telling you guys something you don't already know.
Since I already knew the company, when Rande first brought it up, it clicked, fast.
