I spent my entire business career in process control and we did a lot of work in oil and gas, gathering, transmission, distribution and processing.
It seems to me that part of the problem will quickly become the need to gather and transport rapidly increasing quantities of natural gas and then to distribute it to convenient sites for selling to the car user. When the hybrid comes of age it is going to do it in many forms creating huge needs for massive amounts of natural gas and a need to compress it to much higher pressures than those at which we currently transport it.
IMHO, thhere will also be a need to find more of it. Probably not as big or many probl;ems associated with this as with the pure hydrogen situation and the one could well lead into the long term solution of the other. The problem will hsave to be addressed. Does anyone have a feel for what is currently underway in this regard ?
I've not been retired long but one gets out of date in a hurry these days.
