EXCELLENT question. Truly excellent. I won't hazard a guess, because I don't paint. My grandmother was an artist, not very good, my mother studied art in college, got an MFA, but never became an actual artist, I worked in printing and advertising for years, so I have been around artist-types all my life, and I can tell you that not one of them could ever in a million years come close to Caravaggio. But then, no one can write music like J.S. Bach, nor sculpt like Michelangelo, nor write like Homer. Maybe it's because artist are part of a tradition, and when the tradition is lost, it is no longer accessable?
