Wednesday December 30, 12:17 am Eastern Time McCain to explore U.S. presidential bid - Post WASHINGTON, Dec 30 (Reuters) - Arizona Republican Sen. John McCain, a Vietnam war hero, will on Wednesday take the first formal steps toward running for president in 2000, the Washington Post reported.
McCain, who spent five years in North Vietnamese prison camps, will file papers with the Federal Election Commission creating a presidential exploratory committee, the Post said, quoting former New Hampshire senator Warren Rudman.
''The formation of an exploratory committee marks the first significant step forward in a campaign for president by John McCain,'' Rudman, who will chair the committee, told the paper.
McCain is known as a strong conservative, but he has frustrated other Republicans by taking independent stances on controversial issues. This year, he co-sponsored a major reform bill with Sen. Russell Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, and led unsuccessful efforts to pass legislation to regulate tobacco.
McCain was also one of the so-called Keating Five senators who interceded with federal regulators on behalf of savings and loan operative Charles Keating, who was later sent to prison. McCain received a mild rebuke from the Senate Ethics Committee.
Other Republicans expected to throw their hats in the ring for the presidency include Texas Gov. George W. Bush and former Tennessee governor Lamar Alexander. |
