Arizona Senator to Explore a Presidential Campaign for 2000 nytimes.com

Then, on the "moving forward" note I vainly try to introduce here from time to time, we have this bit on a name I sometimes drop, John McCain. This piece doesn't make him sound like any more than a long shot, but what the heck.

McCain, who is 62 and has served in the Senate since 1987, stands out from many other prospects because he has a reputation as a consensus builder who reaches across party lines to champion issues that are not always popular in his party such as the tobacco bill and campaign finance legislation. But despite his conservative bona fides and record as a foe of abortion, McCain's close relationships with Democrats could cost him some support in his party's primaries, which are dominated by hard-edged partisans.

Oops. He's capable of crossing party lines and dealing with Democrats, which would make him a partisan hater by local standards. As opposed to the non-partisan, professional Republicans which the liberal media scurrilously mislabels as "hard edged partisans". Too bad.
