Although somewhat dated Security Dynamics discusses (real or imagined) barriers to smart card entry in a white paper located at: securid.com It is interesting to note however that smart cards are a billion dollar business and are experiencing exponential growth. Standards are pretty well in place. The availability of low cost readers (PC/SC compliant) helps remove some barriers (particularly in the US where the smart card has considerably less exposure than elsewhere in the world) and this is SCM's space.
