Jim,

Someone who is intimately involved with the company would be better suited than I to answer this. But I imagine all of the things you mentioned come into play. Don't forget QCOM is shipping their Nth generation of ASIC now. Sorry I don't remember which. But it seems to me that a lot of the edge is simply the fact that doing these things is not trivial and QCOM has been doing them a lot longer than anyone else.

Don't forget who Dr's Viterbi and Jacobs are either. They have been involved in a lot of what we see in digital communications and techniques for decades. I have a copy of Dr Viterbi's latest book "CDMA Principles of Spread Spectrum Communication" and on page 156 in the coding and interleaving chapter in a secton entitled "A Near-Optimal Class of Codes for Coherent Spread Spectrum Multiple Access, quote"The resulting convolutional code is called a superorthogonal code [Zehavi and Viterbi, 1990; Viterbi, 1993a], in contrast with the earlier [Viterbi, 1967b], more conventional orthogonal convolutional code......". Jim, did you see those dates? Lots of people don't realize that CDMA is all about codes. Codes, codes, codes... and who is the code man leading the effort at Qualcomm? And what kind of track record does he have? And how many are there like him in the world? This fellow is at the bleeding edge of this technology and has been, going back to the 1960's. Is it really any wonder QCOM has an edge?

Regards

Walt
