IMO: DVD will surpass SVCD before SVCD has the chance to achieve the volumes VCD currently enjoys. DVD chips are already coming into the market that can play all the CD formats (DVD, Video CD 1.1 and 2.0, CD-I, and CD-DA ). Zoran's DVD chip does this as does C-Cube's, but ESS doesn't appear to. SVCDs cost more than VCDs so why are people buying them today instead of buying the cheaper VCD player? Would you buy something that's being obsoleted? Same will happen with DVD vs SVCD much sooner than your timeframe.
