Tony, >>>This is like saying IBM would be a basket case without System 390. Hmmm.<<<
I know you are a System 390 mainframe type person and we have discussed this a number of times in the past, but what you are saying about the System 390 and high end servers doesn't jive with my intuition.
Intuitively, my sense is that more than 50% of the mission critical program code running on System 390 were written for and ran on older systems (like Systems 370 and maybe even some Systems 360).
I just can't imagine that any accounts payable, receivable, payroll, order entry, billing, and marketing and sales program developed and implemented pre System 390 has changed much in terms of requirements and functionality. What payroll program - no matter how big (100,000 - 1,000,000 employees) the company - could not run on a high end server? I can't believe there is an accounts payable system in existence that couldn't be run on a high end server. - Your RAS notwithstanding.
You don't need to respond to this - I just wanted to get this off my chest.
