I think the so called internet appliances will supplement the PC, but not obviate the need for it. Do you want to post to SI from your cell phone? Do you want to read the New York Times on your cell phone? Besides the PC is now getting very cheap and easier to use.

To some extent I agree with you. Nokia and Ericson I believe told MSFT they don't need windows inside their phones. But MSFT has a history of getting it right sooner or later. They will adapt.
