I will continue trying to invent some reason for this absurd purchase beyond what I've already said. That was that Case has made this move unilaterally
because of ego considerations.
In this comment you have stumbled into the truth. It is something only us simple minded people can easily see, and what we have been saying all along.
AOL has as its only interest to be the center of as much of the activity on the internet as it can. Profit if it comes is only a secondary concern. AOL would buy YHOO & EBAY if it could. Roughly half of all net users will now be using "AOL Navigator" to access the net which will have built in links to AOL sites, business users who never faced the AOL name before will go to "AOL Netcenter". Its all about the ego (or the genius) of having the AOL name assault the user at every turn so that AOL *is* the internet in the mind of the uninitiated. Absorb and assimilate. A lesson learned from MSFT.
