Re: <<individual plans for women under 35 at $400/mo+ is another one, >>

Mine is over $600 a month, type 2 diabetes that costs $11 per month to control and a trip to the Chiropractors every other month, not covered, as is any back problem in my case.

The issue here is slightly different than yours. If you are over a certain age and have some ailment then I guess insurance companies have the right to charge more (although this is a huge can of worms because the truth is the large groups negotiate cut rates and the insurers then need to profit somehow so they overcharge the individuals), however women under 35 are charged excessively based on the likeliehood that they will have children only. Now, maybe you could make an argument that if we charge older people more, just because they are older, then whats wrong with charging under-35 year old women more? Well maybe that might be true except proportionately the numbers dont add up. Out here Blue Cross charges $423/month for a 30 yr old woman individual plan. The mens rate at 30 is around $120 or something like that. $423/mo is around 5K/year. It doesnt cost $5000 to have a baby unless there is some supreme complication (especially with the drive through deliveries the HMOs are pushing). The net net of these excessive rates is a huge number of young women just arent insured. Just philisophically, I have a problem with gauging somebody who just got out of college and likely has no money anyway. This is a womans issue because nobody else has addressed it.
