Ron,

You're quite right in the respect that we individual investors can out perform the mutals. We get to pick our own stocks and can decide if we want to gamble it all on one stock or not. I still think having a good index fund as part of your portfolio is essential to smooth out the bumps individual stocks have.

The concern being expressed is one that irrational enthusiasm is driving the market or individual stocks. i.e. The market has to go up because it went up every day before, plus I need to retire early ! As the 2nd documentary showed, when you're to the point where everyone is a bull you're very likely to have a correction.

I know everyone is in love with Intel, but do yourself a favor and graph the old can-do-no-wrong IBM over the last few years. Had you been fully invested for retirement in IBM during the last recession you would have just about broken even right now. Could it happen to Intel during a recession ? How many people do you think would bail out based on all the recent complaining over a mere 5 dollar drop ?

Regards, Maurice
