I don't think it is a question of ORCL having some new web based software that is better than MSFT. I think the low down is that you are missing the point. It isn't about who has the best software, it is about a contrast in architecture. The web based model versus the client server model. In the traditional client server architecture, the data resides in a database and the application software resides on the client. The client is usually thought of to be a PC running a windows type GUI application that talks to the database on the server. It could be an Oracle database or it could be someone elses database. Orcale just happpens to rule the database world like Microsoft rules the PC world. In the web based or three tier architecture, the application resides on a middle tier that is accessable via the web to any client machine with a browser. It could be a PC, it could be a NC or in the not too distant future, it could be a number of different 'network appliances' depending on the characteristics of the application and the needs or the user or client. The application still talks to the database that still lives on the server. What this means to, say a company with an application running on 1000 PC's, is that when they upgrade or modify the application, they only do it once. They only have to make changes to the application (or web) server in the middle. This drastically reduces redundancy and maintenance costs while increasing flexiblity. It also opens the door for electronic commerce. A business run from a web site can be accessed by anyone having internet access. A web based application can be accessed from anywhere in the world, not just from the PC where it resides. I hope this didn't make you more confused than you were. It really isn't about MSFT versus ORCL. Other companies besides ORCL make software that will run web based applications and access a database server. ORCL is however, in a nice position and is rapidly moving it's core products in this direction. MSFT will get to the party a little late, but Bill is no fool, they will get there. We will all get there because it makes sense. Just like moving lots of stuff off of mainframes to PCs made sense a few years ago. It makes dollars and cents, and that is the driving force. All of what I have sad is just my opinion os take it with a grain of salt.
