(COMTEX) B: Online Computer Sales Top $1 Billion at Retail, Reports C
B: Online Computer Sales Top $1 Billion at Retail, Reports Computer Retail Week

MANHASSET, N.Y. (Dec. 30) BUSINESS WIRE -Dec. 30, 1998-- Sales Among
Leading Outlets Increase to $37.6 Billion, According

to Annual Top 100 Retailers Survey

Online retailers posted well over $1 billion in combined
computer-products sales in 1998, according to the annual Top 100
Retailers survey to be published in the January 4, 1999, issue of CMP
Media's Computer Retail Week. These include online-only retailers like
Cyberian Outpost, as well as the online efforts of established
retailers such as CDW Computer Centers, with projected Web sales of
$100 million.

Overall, despite lower prices of personal computers which may have made
their work more challenging, computer retailers posted solid gains with
Internet stores, direct marketing and better control of inventory
pushing 1998 sales among the Top 100 Retailers to a projected total of
$37.6 billion. In a year-to-year comparison, that excludes mail order
and 1998 start-ups, the Top 100 Retailers achieved a respectable 13.8
percent increase in computer-merchandise sales to $29 billion this year
from $25.5 billion in 1997.

The build-to-order model also helped sales substantially in 1998, with
new entrant Gateway Country Stores racking up an estimated $745 million
in its first full year of sales.

CompUSA heads the Top 100 Retailers ranking with $5.75 billion in
projected 1998 annual sales, up 13.4 percent from $5.07 billion in
1997. Its continued growth is attributed in part to the August 1998
acquisition of Computer City, ranked fifth in 1997, and an increased
volume of corporate sales.

The Top 10 retailers are:

1. CompUSA (NYSE: CPU) $5.75 billion
2. Best Buy (NYSE: BB) 3.93 billion
3. Office Depot (NYSE: ODP) 2.9 billion
4. Micro Warehouse (Nasdaq: NWHS) 2.32 billion
5. Circuit City Stores (NYSE: CC) 2.08 billion
6. Staples (Nasdaq: SPLS) 1.91 billion
7. CDW Computer Centers (Nasdaq: CDWC) 1.67 billion
8. OfficeMax (NYSE: OMX) 1.24 billion
9. Micro Center 1.1 billion
10. Global Direct Mail (NYSE: GML) 1.08 billion

The complete survey findings and Top 100 Retailers ranking will be
published in Computer Retail Week's January 4 issue and is posted on
its Web site at www.crw.com.
