"I'm really glad that Apple broke its policy of secrecy to tell us that they won't be introducing the portable. "

It was really annoying to hear all the rumors that the consumer portable will be released at the Jan MacWorld Expo and I'm glad that issue has been put to rest. Jobs said it won't be announced at MWSF, sources have been saying for months that it isn't even close to being finished. Jan Expo simply wasn't the time frame for its release in the first place. It simply doesn't make sense but as soon as a writer at ZDnet get confused everyone picks it up as news. Now people are speculating that it will be released later in Jan or in Feb at MacWorld Expo Tokyo. I seriously doubt it. Not only is the product not suppose to be ready, Apple would not introduce something as important as the consumer portable outside of the US. Domestic market now accounts for 60+% of Apple's total revenue so this is Apple's primary audience.

In addition I am quite certain that name "Webmate" has nothing to do with the consumer portable currently being developed. Yet no one bother to check the facts and the media repeated associate the two. More on this later...

With Apple's product line now consisting of 4 major categories I think the most logical thing to do is to have one major product release per quarter. By major product release I mean a form factor change and not just speed bumps or color change.

Jan-Mar Calendar Q1 Pro Desktop (Yosemite)
Apr-Jun Calendar Q2 Consumer Portable (P1) may intro but ship a bit later at MW Expo
Jul-Sep Calendar Q3 Pro Portable (101)
Oct-Dec Calendar Q4 Next Generation iMac

This way major product releases are spread out and each of the 4 basic product line is completely renewed roughly every 14 months with a couple of speedbumps and revisions between form factor change. Furthermore this would allow the consumer portable to be ready for the Q3 back to school season and the next generation iMac to be released for next year's Christmas buying season. I didn't include this in the list but Yosemite line is also expected to be updated in second half of 1999 to incorporate G4 at which time the code-name Yosemite would no longer apply.

Since fiscal Q1 99 is officially over I guess it is okay to talk about products in the pipeline without fearing that consumers will put off purchase. The focus of MW Expo will be Yosemite. Speed bumped iMacs are being ramped up as we speak and will be released this quarter as well. Sources close to production have been saying for a couple months now that the processor used will be PowerPC 750 running at 266MHz; however just about everyone else are saying 300MHz. The availability of iMacs in different colors has been confirmed. I also expect speed bumped G3 PowerBooks to be released this quarter.

BTW, got a call from our friends at MacNN saying that MacOS X server (Rhapsody) will be released today.
