With Apple's product line now consisting of 4 major categories I think the most logical thing to do is to have one major product release per quarter.

This makes perfect sense. I think that's what Apple was trying to do last year, but they didn't have the full product line ready, and they were late with the pro portables. It kind of reminds me of Steve's plan for Pixar, in which they will work on two movies at once, so that every year sees a launch. This evens out revenues and keeps investors happy.

It clearly makes sense to refresh the consumer desktops in advance of calendar Q4, or even in Q3 sometime so that marketing has time to kick in before Xmas. The iMac was perfectly timed that way. I don't know if there's any logic to the timing of the other releases, though.

It also makes sense to stagger the 4 quadrants, so that pro and consumer models come out in alternating quarters. That way different sectors of the market are served successively. It would also make sense to stagger desktop and portable, but it's impossible to stagger both form factor and market sector at once.

Off-topic: I never quite understood the use of the term "speedbump" as a metaphor for an increase in processor speed. Speedbumps are things that are used to slow down cars. "Speedjump" would make more sense. I'm not singling you out Eric--everyone in the computer media uses the term--but unlike others you're available to respond to.
