I don't claim to know who the republicans will ultimately nominate in 2000, but my sense is that it's more likely than not that George Bush won't be the man. I get the feeling that he's cut from the same cloth as Collin Powell, deeply hesitant about running for president. Part of him really wants to do it, feels he needs to do it. Then a major part of him shrinks from it, does not want to put his family or himself through the meat grinder, with his past. Let's face it, the race for Texas Governor is no comparison to "the big one", although we have had our moments (ala Ann Richards and Mr. "Lay down and enjoy it").

So, I'm betting that Bush will opt not to run. Of course if he chooses otherwise, he'll be the heavy favorite going into it.

Some other potential republican nominees: McCain (Arizona), Steve Forbes (long shot), or possibly Jack Kemp. Mr. Quayle, thankfully, hasn't the proverbial chance in hell.
