No one is ruling out anybody. The HPs, the SUNs, and the
IBMs are extremely competitive companies. SUNs ability to
make a tramendous amount of lead way in the high end server
business comes not only from their ability to design advanced
hardware, but also from years of software experience in
mission critical applications. Starfire will be a hit because
there is really nothing out there in the market that could
approach it in terms of price/performance and flexibility.

Assuming that Merced could come out on time. My question
is does HP have the know how build a multiprocessor system
with the appropriate software to run mission critical app as
well and as reliable as SUNs. Furthermore, does HP have the
enough support in 3rd party enterprise software developer support
as much as SUN. For that matter does anybody else in the high
end unix world?

BTW, SUN is already at their 3rd generation 64 bit
processor now. Their 64 bit technology is very mature.

My question is, is anybody foolish enough to believe that
SUN has no plans for their next generation processor? Does Boeing
not design and build new commerical aircrafts?

HP is a highly respectable company. But enterprise and
massively networked computer systems is the bread and butter of
SUN. To believe that SUN will not continue to invest and lead
in that area is to believe that Intel has given up on X86.
