You are talking about the whole world changing, ease of travel, info, etc but the one thing that never changes is people like to have a certain amount of money and security. That is what gold offers. I would never trust a govt to supply that. Here in Vancouver there are 75 houses on leased land where the ground rent has gone from $375 a year to $28,000 a year. The houses used to be worth $500,000 , the most recent transaction was at $132,000. The land is Indian Reserve land and the Indians are the landlords. The Department of Indian affairs of the Canadian Govt have control of the Indian bands and the Supreme Court has ruled that the $28,000 per year is a fair ground rent. Thank God I do not live there but I will never trust a govt or any of its civil servants to do the right thing.
